School shootings are becoming more frequent in U.S as the latest figures underline the fact how deadly it is becoming.
The latest firing at Florida high school on Wednesday is the 18th according to this year’s numbers. It has become a common phenomenon and the authorities and the government remains perplexed on this gun culture which is taking its toll even in schools.
It has become common in U.S schools where elementary and secondary school students are
given drills on how to act during a shooting situation.
Among these attacks, eight out of the 18 school shootings, no one was injured as it was just mere firing alone. Out of these, two were suicide attempts and the rest attack on others.
Meanwhile a speech by a senior, named Emma Gonzalez, at Marjory Stoneman Doughlas High School who had survived the shooting spree has taken online media by storm. She said, “Since the time of the Founding Fathers and since
they added the second amendment to the constitution, our guns have developed at a rate that leaves me in dizzy. The guns have changed but our laws have not.”
She further added, “We certainly do not understand why it should be harder to make plans with friends on weekends than to buy an automatic or semi-automatic weapon. In Florida, to buy a gun you do not need a permit, you do not need a gun license, and once you buy it you need to register it. You do not need permit to carry a concealed rifle or shotgun. You
can buy as many guns as you want at one time.” She also stated about the Obama era regulation, “In February of 2017 one year ago, President Trump repealed an Obama era regulation that would have made it easier to block the scale of firearms to people with certain mental illness.”
Emma Gonzalez’s speech has kick-started a debate which is more vigorous than the usual. Students are leading the agitation after death of 17 students and faculty at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
She told the people gathered, “We are going to be the last mass shooting and we are going to change the law…”
Emma accused Donald Trump for receiving millions of dollars
from the NRA (The National Rifle Association) for his campaign during the 2016 election cycle.
There was news that NRA had spent more than 31 million to boost Trump’s image during election campaign and to win over Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
People who watched her speech on television described her as a hero and the voice of the distressed new generation of U.S. Her name was trending on Twitter after her address. It has sparked a new debate and a new voice and a new leader is surely emerging. Let us hope that this will be a new beginning in the history of United States to wipe out this money crazy gun business which is taking lots of innocent lives every year.
