"World Odyssey" -  Floating University 

     ‘World Odyssey,’ a luxury cruise carrying students, teachers and ship workers counting to more than a 1000 people has reached India with a purpose of studying and visiting various states. The passengers in the cruise, are involved in the ‘Semester At Sea’ program conducted by the University of Virginia in the United States of America, include students and teachers from over 200 universities all across the globe.

Semester At Sea program focuses on student success and global comparative education. The first ever voyage of the kind was in the year 1963. The mission of Semester At Sea program is to educate students with the global understanding necessary to address the challenges of our interdependent world.

The program translates the world as a classroom, and the unique shipboard program integrates multiple-country 

study, interdisciplinary coursework, and hands-on field experiences for meaningful  engagement  in  the  global community.

Spring 2016- A Voyage around the World in the World Odyssey cruise has now covered eight cities and Cochin is the ninth one as of now. The luxury cruise that embarked on the journey from San Deigo, California has passed through Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam and Burma. The rest of the route includes stops at Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana and Morocco, and the trip debarks at London, England.

Semester At Sea program is sponsored by various universities during various voyages. As of now, the program is conducted by the University of Virginia.  Through out  the  history of  the

program, nearly 55,000 undergraduate students from more than 1,500 colleges and universities have participated in Semester At Sea.

During the Spring and Fall semesters, the program that lasts around 100 days, circumnavigates the globe with up to 720 undergraduates traveling from North America leading either east across the Atlantic or west across the Pacific, going through eight to eleven countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America, before ending the voyage in another North American port.

The cruise started off from San Diego on January 5th, 2016. This current voyage is scheduled to last 102 days, visiting 15 cities and 11 countries. At the moment, the cruise has reached Cochin harbour in Southern India. Anchoring here for almost a week, the students will travel to various towns and cities in nearby states to study about them. The cruise will continue on its path till March 3rd.
